| Mie Infectious Disease Surveillance Center is a public institute for infectious disease surveillance in Mie prefecture, and exchanges the information on infectious diseases with the national center (Infectious Disease Surveillance Center) and people in Mie prefecture. | |
1. The Infectious Diseases Control Law and MIDS |
|
| In April 1999, the 'Law Concerning the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Medical Care for Patients of Infections' (hereafter referred as the Infectious Diseases Control Law) was enacted. 'The National Infectious Diseases Surveillance Program' was also put into effect in compliance with the enforcement of the Infectious Diseases Control Law, because the program was defined as the main objective of this law. According to the program, MIDS was settled in the Public Health and Environment Research Division of Mie Prefectural Science and Technology Promotion Center in 1999 and started its activities in 2000. | |
2. Activities |

| MIDS serves as the prefectural focus of 'Mie Prefectural Surveillance of Infectious Diseases Program'. The center collects and analyzes information on the incidents of the target diseases and infectious agents in the whole prefecture, and then quickly reports and provides the summarized data with information on the whole country level to public health institutes, the Medical Association, the medical institutions concerned, the municipalities, and people in this area. | |
3. Organization and Surveillance systems at MIDS |

| MIDS conducts for 'Mie Prefectural Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Program (1999)' in compliance with the Infectious Diseases Control Law. A brief summary of the Organization and Surveillance systems are as follows. | |
| 1) Mie Infectious Disease
Surveillance Center (Public Health and Environment Research Division, Epidemiology group):To obtain and analyze information on infectious diseases, and then
give feedback and publish the summarized data. 2) Mie Infectious Disease Surveillance Planning Committee (Consisting of 11 people of experience or medical experts):To make specific infectious disease surveillance plans in order to analyze and evaluate the surveillance, and to give instruction and advice. 3) Public Health and Environment Research Division, Microbioloy group:To test pathogens and analyze the results. 4) Health and Welfare Division, Health Risk Management Section:To manage the infectious disease surveillance and measure. |

4. Collection, Analysis, Distribution of Information on Infectious Diseases |

| (1) According to the National and Mie Infectious Diseases Surveillance Program, incidence of the target infectious diseases is to be electronically reported to MIDS. Then MIDS analyze the collected information and distribute these summarized data as weekly, monthly, or annual reports. The 86 diseases which must be reported from physicians or medical institutes are following. | |
| ・44 target diseases such as
Cholera, Shigellosis and Enterohemorrhagic E-coli infection, etc. must be immediately
reported by all physicians or medical institutes. ・14 target diseases such as Amebiasis, AIDS and etc. must be reported within 7 days by all physicians or medical institutes. ・28 target diseases such as Influenza, Measles and etc. must be reported by designated clinics and hospitals in Mie prefecture. | (2) How to distribute information on the target infectious diseases | |
| 1) MIDS Home Page Topics, weekly ,monthly or annual reports and press release on infectious diseases informations will appear on this home page. 2) Mailing lists for members of 15 Medical Associations in Mie prefecture In order to share the detailed infectious diseases informations and cooperate with physicians on epidemiological incidences in each area, we have collaborated with 15 Medical Associations in Mie prefecture to build a network on the web (mailing lists). The number of the physicians joining the mailing lists is now about 480. 3) E-mail and internet facsimile for the medical institutions concerned, the municipalities and etc. The detailed infectious diseases informations are provided to the medical institutions concerned, the municipalities and etc. with the e-mail or internet facsimile in order to share on realtime. The number of those joining the e-mail is now about 400. 4) Contribution to the Monthly Report of Mie Medical Association The summarized data of infectious diseases incidences are contributed to the Monthly Report of Mie Medical Association by month. 5) Publication of annual report The annual report of detailed data of infectious diseases incidences is published by year. |
